About Founder and President Arnold Goldberg
As the grandson of a Russian emigrant of the Bolshevik Revolution who pioneered the concept of skilled, longterm care in the Chicago area in the 1920s, Goldberg lived on the top floor of a three-flat on Sheridan Road that housed a nursing home on the first two levels. While other kids played about the neighborhood, young Arnold devoted himself dutifully to helping his grandmother and father care for the 25 residents who found their comfort, security and hope within the walls of this groundbreaking residence. "My earliest childhood memories are of tidying up rooms, getting the lunch trays ready and talking with residents," said Goldberg. "By age 10, I was able to mop floors, feed the patients, and cut the grass out front. I reveled in seeing my grandmother work with my father and enjoyed interacting with the patients and their families. That's when I discovered my passion for serving." By age 20, in his second year of college, Goldberg had already gained his administrator's license and knew emphatically that he wanted to realize his own vision for creating a skilled nursing community. To gain additional experience, though, he first went to work as an assistant administrator at a local nursing facility and spent the next two decades working in management. All the while, he went to school on the pros and cons of the skilled, long-term care strategies he saw being practiced. "I quickly discerned that so many individuals with Alzheimer's, for instance, weren't getting enough attention," said Goldberg. "I decided then to seek out a better approach - a more humane, personal and practical approach. I decided to study everything from the architectural layouts of facilities to the creation of small households, as well as activity-focused care and the benefits of high-staffing ratios." Mr. Goldberg then traveled the world over, studying best practices in assisted living and skilled nursing residences before designing, building and staffing both facilities to offer a complete continuum of care. The Ponds serves as the area's premier assisted living residence, while its sister facility - The Wealshire - provides rehabilitation and Medicare services, all levels of nursing care for Alzheimer's, dementia and non-dementia residents, and special care programs for individuals with Parkinson's. Both communities, situated on 20 beautifully manicured acres in the Chicago suburb of Lincolnshire undoubtedly reflect Goldberg's commitment to reflect the same type of personal care his grandmother and father demonstrated. Today, he remains passionate about honoring the health, safety, dignity and quality of life of every resident at both The Wealshire and The Ponds. "There's nothing better than offering others peace of mind," he said. "That's truly what matters to me." 150-170 Jamestown Lane
